Breast Reduction (Reduction Mammoplasty)
Breast reduction (reduction mammoplasty) surgery reduces the size and improves the shape of overly large breasts. Breast reduction surgery not only improves the cosmetic appearance of heavy, sagging breasts, but also alleviates the physical discomfort caused by disproportionately large breasts.
What Are the Benefits of Breast Reduction Surgery?
Breast reduction surgery is beneficial for women who are unhappy or self-conscious of their breast size. Breast reduction can also correct a number of physical problems associated with enlarged breasts, including:
Restricted movement and physical activity.
Back and neck pain.
Skin irritation and infection.
Shortness of breath.
Difficulty fitting into clothing.
About Breast Reduction Surgery
Breast reduction surgery is a difficult cosmetic surgery procedure. It is very important to choose an experienced and thorough plastic surgeon.
Dr. Rapaport generally performs breast reduction procedures on-site surgical suite. The procedure is performed under general anesthesia, and patients will typically be discharged home the same day. Patients who live more than a one hour drive away should plan to spend the night in Manhattan.
It is important to note that all breast reduction surgeries involve scars. In general, scars may occur around the areolus, vertically down from the areolus, and sometimes horizontally within the breast fold.
Every individual scars differently, and Dr. Rapaport will review with each patient what he considers to be the likely type of scarring they can expect. The type of scarring one can expect relates largely to skin color, age, and the exact type of procedure to be performed.
All breast reduction patients wear a surgical bra for 2 weeks post-operatively. Because Dr. Rapaport’s closure technique involves layers of internal, dissolvable sutures, there will in all likelyhood be no external sutures visible, and no sutures to be removed post-operatively! Follow-up visits will occur in order to monitor the progress of healing. Most breast reduction surgery patients resume their daily routines within about one week, however patients are advised to take it very easy for the first 2 weeks after surgery. Patients must wait three or more weeks before resuming exercise or other strenuous activities. Patients should also be very gentle with your breasts for six weeks following surgery.
Smoking and Breast Reduction
Any procedure where the skin is actually lifted and reshaped, such as breast reduction, breast lift, facelift, or tummy tuck, poses a challenge to the blood supply of the skin. Cigarette smoking, or for that matter any form of smoking, significantly reduces the quality of blood flow within the skin, and therefore leads to increased risk of major complications, including skin loss or loss of the areolus itself. It is for this reason that Dr. Rapaport will not perform the above procedures on any patient who continues to smoke. He requires abstinence from all smoking for 6 weeks prior to the procedure, and a minimum of 2 weeks following the procedure.
Breast Reduction Surgery and Insurance
Breast reduction surgery may be covered by insurance. Unfortunately, insurance companies have made the process more difficult in recent years. Insurance coverage for breast reduction is determined on a case by case basis. It is important to note that Dr. Rapaport does not participate in any insurance networks. Therefore, the possibility of coverage only exists in patients who have out of network benefits.
